Oscars Review 2015

    At the request of several interested parties, here are my post Oscars thoughts.

    Though most of my favourites didn't win, I wasn't particularly surprised by the results. Having said that, I am appalled at Patricia Arquette's win. I thought her performance was mediocre with actual bad moments, and I didn't at all understand the nomination. Good acceptance speech though.

    There were quite a few stand out speeches, in the midst of shopping lists of thanks (really, they just won a creative award, you'd think they'd figured out that no-one wants to hear a list of names rattled off at top speed, trying to beat the ominous music!). Topics ranging from suicide to ALS to veterans to equal rights were feelingly brought up and I for one enjoyed all. It's your moment, the podium is yours, might as well make it count.

    The big surprises for me came in the form of the actual ceremony. Neil Patrick Harris started off well (though not as strong as, say, Hugh Jackman in the same style) but quickly fell flat as his jokes elicited little response from the audience. As the night progressed he seemed nervous and uncomfortable, and almost in pain by the end. I liked the tightey-whitey Birdman/Whiplash gag but that was about it.

    On the other hand, boy can Lady Gaga sing!! She proved that a good singer is versatile and can adapt their technique to the repertoire. Left me with tears in my eyes.  

On a final note, loved John Travolta's comeuppance by Idina Menzel, hehe.

    Dickens was onto something by naming one of his novels Great Expectations; they really do colour how you react and ultimately feel about things. In this case, Netflix's little preview set me up for a revenge thriller that would be more talking and less punching but still keep the tension humming.     Instead, I was treated to over an hour of pretty much nothing happening, then something momentous coming out of the blue in a rush, followed by an awkward fast forward and epilogue of sorts. Matilda the Musical

[originally posted on social media in August 2014]      Matilda was AMAZING!!!! Everyone told me so but I was a little apprehensive as it was my favourite book growing up; but it's awesome! Left with moist eyes and a huge grin, and even after 3.5 hours I'm still on cloud nine. [May 2020 edit, after watching the show two more times]      After three viewings, Matilda is quite possibly my favourite musical currently on the West End. It takes some liberties with the story but in ways that bring us closer to the feel of the book, not further away. The music is original and witty, perfectly capturing the different characters; I mean, it's Tim Minchin so I can't say I'm surprised! And the staging is brilliant whilst still fairly simple.     With three different casts under my belt, I can also safely say that the performance quality is consistent, both in the adults and the children. tick, tick...BOOM! Review

Dear Lin-Manuel Miranda. I have ranted against your poor composing skills, your excruciatingly bad acting, and your inability to sing, along with slamming your weak lyrics and the immense hubris of repeatedly casting yourself as the lead in your own musicals. And I stand by all I have said. But credit where credit is due: this film you have directed is brilliant. The directing is superb, showing a true understanding of how to tell a story through the musical medium whilst being innovative and original. Every single cast member delivered a rock-solid performance, telling me you know how to coax the best out of your actors and are savvy when picking final takes. Above all, your passion for musical theatre permeates every single scene and the film feels like a love letter to the art form. Bravo, thank you, and please keep directing as I feel you have finally found what you excel at.
